16th Asia Games 2010 – Men Doubles Badminton Finals (Khoo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong vs Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan)

November 28, 2010

The Men’s Doubles finals was another highly anticipated match as it featured the Olympic champion Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan vs Malaysia’s world No. 1 Khoo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.

The word no.1 pair were in top form leading up to the tournament while the Indonesians were not really having the best of years due to injury. Coming into the Finals, the Indonesians played one of their best games of the year by beating the Korean’s Jung Jae Sung / Lee Yong Dae 21-15, 13-21, 21-18.

Khoo Kien Keat / Tan Boon Heong however were defending champions and were looking to capture a gold medal for Malaysia. The game started well where the Malaysians won 21-16 easily. It looked like the semi’s game took a toll on Markis and Hendra..

What I love about the Indonesians is that they never gave up. They re-focused, pushed themselves and started the second game in a more aggressive mode.. The game was fun to watch towards the last few points as both teams were saving match/game points from each other. It was nerve wrecking to watch as the Malaysians had 2 match points which the Indonesians saved. Markis/Hendra managed to squeeze and win the game 26-24.

The final set went the Indonesians way 21-19. Markis and Hendra were overjoyed with the win as it was their biggest win of the year. Overall the Malaysians played their best however they were unlucky in the second set to win. The Indonesians however had a steady Markis who played a superbly in by making up for the mistakes Hendra was making. Hendra wasn’t playing his best game however he did show some of his brilliance during bits and pieces of the game.

Here are some quotes from both teams:

To me, I feel that the Malaysians really must shine at the big events to make a stamp in the major scenes.

“We didn’t have much preparation for the Asian Games but we proved we can still be among the top pairs in the world,” said a delighted Setiawan, who along with Kido, have been training on their own since the split with PBSI.

“They played well and were more daring than us. They took their chances well,” said Boon Heong.

Kien Keat said: “We gave it our all and it’s disappointing to settle for silver. It should have been better. But overall, we do not regret with the way we played in losing the match.”
