China Open 2008 – Finals Overview

November 23, 2008

Hello there badminton-holics! How’s the week been? its been a great week of badminton from what i’ve seen. It’s time to relax, grab a beer or some cold drinks, turn on your tv and enjoy the exciting China Open 2008 finals LIVE. I’ve always expected it to be an great and memoriable tournament and it sure did live to my expectation. Out of the 5 categories, its no surprise that China is in all finals except the Men’s Doubles. We have 2 Malaysian’s, 2 Korean’s and 1 Danish pair as the other finalist.

Here we go, the finals! In the men’s singles we have the World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei vs World No. 2 Lin Dan in another battle of the titans. Lee Chong Wei is looking for his first title after becoming the top ranked player in the world, while his opponent will be looking for his first title in his return from the Olympics. Lee Chong Wei will be looking to take revenge and he has been training and preparing himself for this finals to prove a point to all his fans. I think honestly, Lin Dan will take the title as he has the home ground advantage. However I think Lin Dan may not be as match fit compared to Chong Wei as Lin Dan had a more difficult semis which may lead to his defeat. For Chong Wei, it’s important that he gets and early start and he has to continue to pressure Lin Dan so that the home favorite would not gain his momentum.

Men’s Doubles: This is the only category where we do not have a Chinese representative in the finals. Whiew.. Looks like there is still a balance in the “force”. The finals would be an interesting battle as we have Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen from Denmark reaching the finals of the super series for the first time. I have not seen them play before until yesterday when they defeated Tony/Candra from Indonesia in a thrilling 3 set game. The pair looks fast and they are good on the attack as both of them have the height to cover the front court well and they have some steep smashes which makes it difficult for any defense. They will take on Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung of Korea who are seeded third in this tournament. The Koreans defeated the Malaysian pair of Khoo Kean Keat and Tan Boon Heong in straight sets. I feel that the Koreans are a steadier pair and they are my favorites to win this. But as we know, anything can happen in badminton; if the Danes manage to create a more attacking opportunity and cover the front court well, they’ll upset the Koreans.

Women’s Doubles: We’re proud to say that Malaysian womens doubles have been doing extremely well in the 2008 season by climbing the world ranks and they have been putting on a very consistent show. Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui will be taking on Zhang Yawen and Zhao Tingting of China. Pei Tty and Eei Hui are seeded second while the chinese pair fifth but this finals would not be based on rankings alone as it will be a whole different ball game all together when you have the home fans supporting Zhao and Zhang. I do hope that Pei Tty and Eei Hui will keep a focused mind and close of the crowds support during the game. If they manage to do this, they should be able to bag their second title of the year.

Ok folks, I’ll be looking forward to the finals and I hope you are too.. you can catch the action LIVE online via CCTV-5 by downloading TVUPlayer, Sopcast or UUSee and the game will be at Sun 14:00~18:00 China time.

Ciao da mao
