China Open 2008 Overview

November 20, 2008

We’re already closing the badminton year with our final few competitions. I’ve been looking forward to this year’s China Open as we’ll see the return of Lin Dan together with Taufik reaching old glory days and Chong Wei trying to prove his World No 1 ranking. It’s going to be a very fun and exciting tournament to watch. This time around my badminton partner Gnana Easwaran who is working in Shanghai will be lucky enough to watch the tournament (hopefully in the players stand).

I’ll be rooting for Taufik for the men’s singles however it’s going to be a difficult battle for him as he’ll be playing in the enemies land where tons of Chinese young talents are just waiting to take him down. On top of that, both Taufik and Lin Dan will be fighting for a place in the Super Series Finals and to get there, Taufik needs a semi’s or a final birth in this tournament as so too Lin Dan. In the men’s doubles, I still think Markis/Hendra are strong bets for the title. However my support for the doubles goes to my buddy Chan Chong Ming/Chew Eng..

Well the first round ended yesterday with no major upsets. The only talking point is that Lee Chong Wei, the top seed had a difficult game against Qiu Yanbo of China. Chong Wei went down in the first-game losing 8-21, however he managed to pull himself up to win the next two games 21-14, 21-16 in a 52-minute first-round match. It’s going to be a difficult battle for Chong Wei as he’s under pressure to win.

I’ll be updating more news as soon I get a hold of my buddy Gnana.

Ciao da mao!
